Ever wonder why the final group matches are played at the same time?  Many fans ask as it can be hard to watch both games at the same time.

One of the big reasons for playing both games together is due to ‘The Disgrace of Gijón’ as it is commonly known.

A lot has changed over the years in the World Cup, but in 1982 Austria and Germany (West Germany at the time) played in Gijon (Spain) in the final game of their group.

Algeria and Chile had played their final game the day before, so a West German win by one or two goals would mean both teams would advance.  Algeria, which had beaten Germany in the opening game would be out.

West Germany scored just 10 minutes into the game and the remaining 80 minutes showed few attempts by either team to score.

Both sides were accused of fixing the outcome, although FIFA ruled that neither team broke any rules.

As a result of this game, and similar events at the previous World Cup in Argentina, FIFA revised the group system for future tournaments, so that the final two games in each group would kick off at the same time.
