The US vs Sweden game in Le Havre was much anticipated for American fans who had attended a memorable (but one sided) win over Thailand, and a relatively easy win over Chile in a game which seven reserves started. Finally, in Sweden we had an opponent that could challenge us. Or so we hoped.
The atmosphere was perfect. Thousands of fans from both US and Sweden arrived early to roam the streets and beaches of Le Havre. It was difficult to figure out which group of fans was larger, the yellow and blue of Sweden stood out and the familiar red, white and blue was also easy to spot at every turn.
The weather was perfect, not quite as hot as the past few days but sunny with a slight breeze. When we arrived in the stadium it became more obvious the US fans clearly outnumbered the Swedes. The crowd was announced at 22,000 and my best guess is almost 15,000 were cheering for the US.
The US didn’t disappoint, scoring in the third minute to take a quick lead. A few fans in our area immediately started talking about another blowout, but Sweden had something to say about that. The US dominated the first half in terms of possession and scoring chances, but Sweden had moments in the game when they created dangerous opportunities to tie the game.
The US scored again in the second half for a 2-0 win which had them win the group and a matchup win with Spain in the next round. A few key players looked a bit off but the US still deserved to win the game. The atmosphere and excitement of being live in the stadium probably created a bit more drama and joy than watching it at home.
The team that wins a major tournament like the World Cup doesn’t always play great soccer for the entire tournament but I worry a bit that the team hasn’t had to hit their groove (or had to hit their groove) consistently. The hope is they come into the Spain game and beyond healthy and fresh to make a run for the title. Time will tell.
